Sammy Bits
So many things, so little time! It’s an odd sensation, being a parent. Especially when you consider the little person you brought into this world, growing right in front of your eyes. Sure there’s all the major firsts: first smile, first laugh, first steps, etc. But there are also a myriad of other, little moments that don’t seem to make it into most peoples general recollections of their child growing up. This is essentially what makes a blog like this priceless for Melissa and I… And one day, hopefully Sam. We can record these little bits that are so easily forgotten in the cavalcade of happenings, that when they occur, are pure genius. But they can be fleeting, these special times, because even though you marvel at the wonders of a child daily, they make you stop and realize that what your experiencing is true a moment to freeze in time and savor. Whilst I try to write here about as many of these bits of Sam’s life as I can, some will unavoidably slip by, uncaught, into the stream of days. Which is kind of sad, but those that have been cradled in our minds and shown to family and friends will make us laugh, cry and relive those past intimacies, like they were fresh and new. For this I will be grateful forever more, and so without further ado… Some Sammy bits for you to enjoy!
Chocolate Banana Milkshake
One of the many great things about our neighborhood is that there is an ice cream stand a paltry ten minute walk from our house. So, on beautifully warm, vacation evenings, we like to take walks to treat ourselves to a little dirty dirty. We don’t go too often, cause we’d soon be rolling ourselves there, but once or twice a week, we pack Sam into his safari wagon for a trip to dairy land. Now Sam has not been a fan of ice cream whether its fed to him by spoon or right from the cone. We suspect it’s the cold on his still budding sensitive teeth. So Dad, that’s me, would be forced to eat not only his own cone, but Sammy’s as well. The injustice I tells ya! One evening, I fancied a milkshake instead, chocolate and banana. Sam was immediately intrigued by my cup and straw, but he didn’t understand how to suck on the straw to get some goodie goodie. Eventually, after I repeatedly placed the straw correctly into his mouth, he began to suck. The effect was instantaneous
His eyebrows hit the ceiling when the first drops of the milkshake hit his tongue, and he never looked back after that. I couldn’t pry the glass out of his hands, and when I did manage to get in a few drops myself, there was soon a hand reaching up for the cup along with a strained cry of “Ehhh! Papa! Ehhhhh!”. Little bugger drank half my shake! From now on, one of use usually gets a shake to get Sam in on the action.
Hugs
Sam has always been a cuddly kid, but recently he’s been dishing out the love for his furry, stuffed friends. At first it was just pillows off our couch, but then he started grabbing his teddy’s and sheep and even Elmo, giving them big hugs while resting his head on theirs. Cuteness overload for sure. Sam has had issues with Elmo in the past never going near him and walking a wide path around the gyrating doll. He didn’t like Elmo’s sudden movements and loud, Bee-Gees like voice screaming out “Tickle Me!”. But they seem to have buried the hatchet as you can see below. Sammy is now, as of this writing, the leading hug giver of our household.

On the Throne
Another bit of distinctly adult behavior that Sam has adopted is his own poop habits. No other way to put it folks, Sam likes a good read when pinching some loafs. Like any one of us, he now prefers a little privacy when ‘laying some cable’, so he found himself a little refuge behind our living room couch. During a typical evening, while Melissa and I are making supper and Sam is running around us playing with his toys, as soon as the racket dies down to a sudden quiet, we know. We tip-toe into the living room following the tiny grunting sounds and sneakily peel over the couch… and there is Sam, one hand on the window sill, the other on his book, straining away. The seriousness on his face during these, ummm, tender moments is priceless. Poor kid, I bet he can’t wait until he’s potty trained to get a little privacy!
Well that’s it for now! What a way to finish eh?
Well, everyone has crappy endings once in a while! Har Har! Don’t forget to have some fun folks, and I’ll blog ya all later!
